Luke Kemp’s Goliath: The History and Future of Societal Collapse is a scholarly and thoughtful exploration of how and why early empires evolved, and then inevitably fell into ruin. Sahra Kress and Jack Santa Barbara interview Luke about his research into how humans lived prior to empires (spoiler alert – people were better off in many ways), what features empires have in common that lead to their demise (the Goliath factor), how our current global empire compares with those of the past, and where we’re headed. And of course, we also explore what’s needed to deal with the current trends toward collapse.
Some questions to discuss:
Is the war in Iran an example of Goliath behaviour?
Has the process of societal collapse started?
What options are available to us to deal with our current and emerging risks?
